Pieve di Trebbio

Un'antica Pieve romanica nel cuore dell'Appennino modenese

In order to reach Pieve di Trebbio, it is necessary climb to 463 metres above sea level. We are situated in the heart of Regional Park of Sassi di Roccamalatina, with a breath-taking view over the rocky spurs. From here, it is possible to take recommended routes passing the many farmhouses and cottages of the area or along the park’s pathways.

Featured on a map of Nonantola of 996 together with Guiglia, Pieve di Trebbio is dedicated to S. Giovanni Battista. Its construction most likely dates to the 11th to 12th Century and thus constitutes one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in the Apennines. Despite some later reconstruction attempts, it has actually maintained a typically Romanesque appearance with a three-nave plan and crypt. The bell tower is built upon a pre-existing fortified tower.

There are many things not to miss; the carved portal on the south side, the original capitals, the sculptures in the chancel and in the baptistery, there is a baptismal font from the 9th Century with bas-reliefs. Inside the Parish of Trebbio, there are precious well-preserved paintings and sculptures, including a painting that depicts San Giovanni Battista, dating back to the 17th Century.
