Terre di Castelli: land of Castles, Art and Culture

terre di castelli vignola rocca di vignola Cappella Lunetta della Resurrezione e della discesa al Limbo di Cristo ph Ghigo Roli

The Terre di Castelli are rich in history. Inhabited since the dawn of time, they have been fought over, conquered, embellished with churches, fortresses, works of art and museums that still tell their story today.

It is difficult to summarise the history of Terre di Castelli in a few lines. Better to set out and take a look for yourself at its still visible traces: let art, archaeology and monuments tell us their stories.

Attention Centuries of history in a fascinating itinerary.

Stages

  • Montale Rangone - Terramara di Montale Archaeological Park

We start with a plunge into the remotest past possible: Prehistory. The Terramara di Montale Archaeological Park takes us back to the 2nd millennium B.C. to discover what the ‘terramara’ (lake dwelling) villages, typical settlements of the area, looked like and how their inhabitants lived.

  • Spilamberto - Torrione and Cella Messer Filippo

Let us move on to the medieval ‘Torrione’ (fortified tower) of Spilamberto, one of the best-preserved fortifications in the Terre di Castelli, and meet Messer Filippo: an unfortunate prisoner imprisoned here in the 16th century... who knows what messages he carved on the walls of his cell?

  • Vignola - The Medieval Fortress

Back on the hunt for castles, we make a stop at the Vignola Fortress, a true symbol of these lands. Once a defensive bastion, then a refined noble residence for the Contrari and Boncompagni families: its mighty structures and delicate frescoes have stories to tell!

  • Savignano sul Panaro – The Venus Museum and the Mammoth Museum

Did you know that there is a prehistoric elephant in Savignano? And that one of the oldest steatopygous Venus statues was found in the same area? Here archaeology has yielded real treasures. We can discover them at the Venus Museum of Savignano and at the Mammoth Museum.

  • Marano sul Panaro - Church of San Lorenzo

We continue on to the historic village of Marano. In the centre of the square is a treasure trove of works of art to be discovered: the Church of San Lorenzo, with its exquisite Madonna delle Grazie and the Black Christ, still venerated as miraculous and carried in procession.

  • Levizzano Rangone - Campo di San Rocco

Do you remember that famous edict by which Napoleon decided to move cemeteries out of towns? Well, in Levizzano you see proof of this with your own eyes. Let's make a stop at Campo San Rocco, at the foot of the Castle: one of the very few examples of former Napoleonic cemeteries still standing.

  • Castelvetro di Modena - Sanctuary of Puianello

We end with a beautiful climb that is well worth the effort. The Baroque sanctuary of Puianello, dedicated to the ‘Madonna della Salute’, towers above the hills of Castelvetro and it is easy to meet pilgrims seeking to be healed. But even if you enjoy good health, the breathtaking view is a good excuse to go!
