An important and ancient route from Central-Eastern Europe, crossing 7 states, arriving at Rome

The Romea Strata was an important European route, travelled by pilgrims from Central-Eastern Europe on their way to Rome: from the Baltic Sea they passed through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria until they crossed the Alps and entered north-eastern Italy via Tarvisio.

The Romea Strata was a path of faith and culture that took pilgrims through Europe, but was most of all a journey of self-discovery.

Before becoming a pilgrimage route, the route was used for multiple purposes, including the trade of amber, salt, iron, silk... The human passage also led to the development of culture, through the art and architecture that we encounter today along this route (hospitality, churches, museums, memories...). The road was also travelled by enlightened minds who left their mark on science, such as Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo Galilei, but also by crucial figures who spread Judaism and Protestantism as well as the Catholic faith along this route.

A lifetime would not be enough to walk its entire length, to know it in all the guises it has worn over time, to experience it in all its 'layers', and hence the name 'STRATA', which means road, but also, and above all, layers of history and lives.

187 Italian municipalities crossed by the Via Romea Strata have approved the route and joined the project and continue to support it annually. Among these are also some of the municipalities in the Terre di Castelli:

    • Guglia
    • Marano sul Panaro
    • Savignano sul Panaro
    • Spilamberto
    • Vignola
    • Zocca
