Discovering the Hops of Marano and Craft Beers
Historical sources attest that the first record of hop cultivation in Italy dates back to 1876 in the territory of the Municipality of Marano sul Panaro.
This cultivation was present on the estate of Marquis Montecuccoli, the first Italian grower of the plant. In 2012, the Municipality of Marano sul Panaro launched a research project in collaboration with the Interdepartmental Centre for Energy and the Environment of the University of Parma to conduct a detailed survey of the territory and to locate and georeference the germplasm of "local ecotype" hops adapted to the foothill environments.
The research project led to the registration of three varieties of Italian hops, "M/P Futura", "M/P Aemilia" and "M/P MODNA" in 2017.
The "Festival of Native Hops" is held in the Municipality of Marano annually during the summer. During the festival, visitors can participate in tastings enlivened by live music and street food.
